We are just over one month into 2023 and continue seeing new faces in our Smart Barre and Pilates studios weekly. As instructors, nothing makes us happier because we know you will love the workout and the results. However, we also understand that being the “new kid in class” can be intimidating. Let’s be honest—looking at a SmartFormer machine for the first time can be a little daunting, am I right? Here’s a secret: you’re not alone! Every single person in your class (including the instructor) stepped onto a SmartFormer machine or took their spot a the barre for the first time once, too. They shook, wobbled, fell off (hi, it’s me!), faced the wrong direction (me, again), felt hopelessly uncoordinated, and got frustrated. Sound familiar?
It’s okay to feel all of those things when you are challenging yourself with something new. However, letting those feelings deter you from reaching your goals is not okay. The only difference between you and your classmates, who seem to have it all figured out, is that they didn’t let intimidation or fear hold them back. Instead, they pushed past their comfort zones and frustrations until they became stronger and gained confidence in their abilities.
At Smart Barre and Pilates, we believe that showing up for the first time is half the battle. Now, let us help you keep showing up with some tips and tricks for overcoming any fear or intimidation. Pretty soon, YOU will be the person who makes it look easy. When that day comes, remember to smile, say hello, and offer encouragement to the next new girl because, at SmartBarre and Pilates, we are all in this together.
Bring A Buddy
There’s strength in numbers, so grab a friend and come together. Working out with a buddy can do wonders for your comfort level and keeps you accountable and motivated. Plus, it’s just plain fun! To make it easy for you and your friends to sweat together, we are offering a referral program throughout February. For every friend you bring who becomes a member, we’ll give YOU $50 off your next month, and your friend will receive $50 off her first month. Talk about a win/win! And remember, your first Smart Barre class is always free, and your first SmartFormer class is just $10. Check it out. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain!
Do Your Homework
Before attending any new fitness class, set yourself up for success by visiting the website or calling ahead to determine what, if anything, you need to bring with you. Ask questions like, does the studio sell water? Are towels provided? Is there a locker room? Do you need special shoes or gear? Our website lists everything you need to bring to get the most from your workout. For example, we strongly suggest non-slip exercise socks for our Smart Barre and Power Pilates classes, and we have plenty available for purchase in our studios if you forget. You can find a comprehensive list of FAQs here.
The Early Bird Gets the Hang of It
Show up 10-15 minutes early for your first class so the instructor can walk you through the basics and answer any questions. Those few minutes before class starts are an excellent time to address any injuries or other physical limitations you may have so that the instructor can provide modifications if needed. Plus, it allows you to introduce yourself and get to know your classmates and your instructor, which can help you relax and go with the flow.
